SCARCE CHOICE AU 1867-S DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1867-S is the scarcest Type Two double eagle from the San Francisco mint. It is not often seen above the AU55 to AU58 grade range and many of the pieces in these holders are bright, poorly defined and abraded.

This lustrous example shows splashes of rich caramel-gold color on the obverse and the reverse. It is better defined than usual and the abrasions which are present are not deep or detracting.

Only one PCGS AU55 has sold since 8/14 and it went cheaply for $3,290 as Heritage 1/16: 6654. Three NGC AU55′s, none of which were CAC approved, brought $3,995, $4,426 and $4,465, respectively, in various 2015 Heritage auctions.
