SSCA serial # 5313, variety 17J “Split Serif.” In the original gold foil holder and accompanied by the presentation box in which it was issued.

The majority of the S.S. Central America double eagles were dated 1857-S. The coins from the earlier years are far scarcer and command a strong premium among collectors.

This example is very choice for the grade and it would likely grade AU58–if not higher–were it resubmitted today to PCGS. It is very lustrous with nice overall surfaces splashes of orange-gold color in the obverse fields.

There have been two current auction records for 1856-S double eagles graded AU55 by PCGS and originating from the SSCA source. One coin had a CAC sticker and was choice; the other wasn’t approved by CAC and was not as pleasing for the grade. Both realized $7,050; the first sale was in Heritage 4/13 auction while the second was sold by Heritage just two months later.

For the collector of SSCA double eagles, this is a wonderful example with all the “bells and whistles” one could hope for; not to mention the fact that the coin itself is as exiting as the presentation!

This specific variety has a CAC population of two in this grade with three finer (two in MS60 and one in MS61).
