In the date run of undervalued Philadelphia Type One double eagles produced from 1855 through 1858, the 1856 is the second scarcest after the 1855. The 1856 is not often seen choicer than AU53 to AU55 and many in this range are bright and bagmarked.

This lustrous example shows some splashes of medium reddish-gold over a lighter orange hue. As is typical for this date, the surfaces are scuffy but none of these is deep or especially detracting.

The last two PCGS AU53 1856 double eagles with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $4,700 and $3,819 as Heritage 8/12: 4723 and Heritage 8/12: 4724, respectively.

CAC has approved 10 in this grade with 26 finer.
