The 1856 is, along with the 1855, one of the most undervalued Philadelphia Type One double eagles. It is scarce in properly graded AU55 and seldom seen with original color and choice surfaces.

This very pleasing and original example shows deep orange-gold color with some deeper hues seen on the relief details. It is lustrous and well defined with light marks seen mostly in the obverse fields. What look like scratches on the left obverse are actually on the holder and the overall eye appeal is well above average for the date and grade.

Heritage 4/14: 6763, also graded AU55 by NGC and approved by CAC, sold for $5,875.

This date is not often seen nicer than this and the present example is more cosmetically appealing than others I have seen in AU58 holders.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 10 finer.
