The 1856 is one of the real “sleepers” in the Type One series. It is comparable in rarity the 1855. The 1856 is usually seen in EF45 to AU53 grades and nice AU55 to AU58 examples are scarce and very undervalued.

This is a charming, high end example with very attractive natural medium orange-gold color and a consierable amount of luster remaining. The surfaces are lightly marked and the naked-eye appearance is suggestive of an AU58. It is not easy to find 1856 double eagles with this degree of eye appeal!

There were only two AU55 examples of this date sold at auction in 2012 (both graded by NGC) and these sold for $3,525 and $3,738, respectively. Neither were approved by CAC and neither were as choice as the present coin.

CAC has approved four in this grade with four finer.
