Small Date variety. Designated as such on the holder by PCGS.
I give the 1854 Small Date less attention than I do the 1855 and 1856 but, in higher grades, it may actually be a scarcer date. Only six Uncirculated examples have appeared at auction since 2008 with none finer than MS61.
This is a strictly “new” coin with lovely rich orange-gold, rose and greenish hues blended on the obverse and reverse. The luster is nearly full and quite frosty in texture while the strike is razor sharp. There are a few small marks on the obverse which limit the grade but this is an uncommonly appealing piece for the grade.
The last Uncirculated 1854 Small Date to sell at auction was a PCGS MS61 which sold for $12,000 in the DLRC9/12 Internet auction.
