The 1853 is seen less often than the 1851 and 1852 and it is actually a scarce, underrated issue in properly graded AU58, especially with natural color and surfaces.

This is a superb “gem slider” with lovely deep rich golden-orange and rose colors atop lustrous, choice surfaces. The obverse has few a few small scuffs in the fields and it shows full detail on the hair; s small reverse scrape below RIC in AMERICA doesn’t detract from the high level of eye appeal.

The last PCGS AU58 1853 $20 to sell at auction brought $4,847 as Heritage 4/13: 5971 and it was not approved by CAC. The only record for a CAC approved example in PCGS AU58 is Stacks Bowers 6/12: 4408 at a strong $5,463.

A nice MS61 example of this date would sell for over $10,000–if available–and it probably would not have the eye appeal of this lovely slider.

CAC has approved 13 in this grade with nine finer.
