The 1853 is a scarcer date than the 1851 and 1852 Philadelphia issues. It is not hard to locate in the upper AU range but few pieces in third-party slabs are choice and original.
This choice AU example shows natural medium orange-gold hues over satiny, minimally abraded surfaces. There are no signs of past cleaning or “improvement” and the eye appeal is well above average for the date and the grade.
Two PCGS/CAC AU55 1853 double eagles brought $4,113 and $4,115, respectively, in the March 2014 and April 2014 Heritage sales.
