The 1851 is one of the more common Type One double eagles. It is easy to locate in grades up to and including AU53 /AU55. Properly graded AU55 to AU58 coins with original color and surfaces are not easy to locate.
This choice, green-gold example shows nice, even coloration with strong overall detail. A good amount of luster remains atop lightly marked surfaces. A small horizontal mark on the cheek of Liberty is not detracting.
Two slabbed AU55 examples of this date sold at auction in 2012. Both were encapsulated by PCGS; a CAC approved coin brought $3,220 while a non-CAC realized $2,990.
A nice example for the date collector working on a run of AU Type One double eagles.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 13 finer.
