SCARCE PCGS/CAC EF40 1870-S HALF EAGLE

Despite a mintage of 17,000 the overlooked 1870-S half eagle is a scarce issue with fewer than 100 known in total. It is not often seen in grades higher than Extremely Fine and most of the pieces in EF holders are very low end.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows pleasing deep natural russet color with plenty of dirt encrusted in the recesses. There is some weakness of strike on the neck feathers but the surfaces are choice with just a few small marks seen in the right obverse field.

The last PCGS/CAC EF40 1870-S half eagle to sell at auction brought $3,173 as Heritage 4/13: 5812.

This seems like great value at less than $3,000.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 7 finer.
