CHOICE AU 1852-D HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 32-V.

The 1852-D is lumped with the 1853-D and 1854-D as "common date" half eagles from this mint but, in reality, it is much scarcer. The 1852-D is not often seen in grades higher than AU53 to AU55 and even less often with natural color and choice surfaces.

This light orange-gold example shows a typical strike for the issue with weakness at the borders; the centers are rather well detailed. There is enough luster and "meat" to suggest an AU55 grade but there is a small patch of shallow marks in the inner left obverse field and a nick near the lips.

The last PCGS/CAC AU53 1852-D half eagle to sell at auction brought $3,741 in the 2/14 Great Collections sale.

A really nice quality D mint half eagle with all the "bells and whistles" for under $4,000.

CAC has approved 7 in this grade with 6 finer.
