RARE CHOICE AU 1865 THREE DOLLARS

The 1865 is the third rarest Philadelphia Three Dollar made for circulation after the 1873 Closed 3 and the 1877. Just 1,140 were made and around 125-150 are known today.

This example is unusual for the issue in that it hasn't been scrubbed as have most 1865 threes. Both sides show deep natural russet color with some rose flashes in the obverse lettering and some dirt within the recesses of the date. A few marks on Liberty's face can be seen with a 5x glass but the overall quality of the surfaces is far better than average for this popular Civil War date.

The last two APR's for this issue in AU55 is $8,813 for a PCGS coin in March 2016 and $7,931 for an NGC in June 2014. A record of over $8,000 for an NGC AU55 exists as far back as July 2005.

It is difficult to locate this date in grades higher than AU55 to AU58 and this piece is clearly nicer than most which have been offered for sale in the last few years.
