SCARCE PCGS AU58 1869 DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1869 is one of the scarcer Philadelphia Type Two double eagles. It is not often seen in properly graded AU58 and Uncirculated examples are scarce and spendy.

This frosty slider shows no real wear but it has enough bag friction on the high spots to keep it from a potentially higher grade. The surfaces are lustrous and lightly marked with very pleasing rich medium orange-gold colors. A small mark on the obverse rim located beneath the 1 in the date is not obtrusive.

The last PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was a very scuffy coin offered as Stacks Bowers 7/15: 6112 which brought $5,875.

As with many of the scarcer P mint Type Two issues, the 1869 seems undervalued in this grade.
