RARE MS63 1842-O DIME

Medium O variety; not designated by PCGS.

More than two million were struck but the 1842-O dime saw extensive local circulation and today this date is rare in higher grade. I am aware of one or two Gems plus another three to five properly graded MS63 to MS64 pieces.

This natural silvery-grey example is undipped and original with good luster and very nice overall detail with a nearly full head seen on the seated figure. A few ticks in the left obverse field barely limit the grade but this piece is very solid for an MS63.

There are four auction records for this date in PCGS MS63 from early 2014 to the present and these range from a low of $3,757 to a high of $4,700.

An excellent value at under $5,000.

Ex Legend Auctions 12/16: 159 where it sold for $3,995; earlier ex Heritage 1/07: 2565 at $4,700.

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
