RARE AU55 1846-O EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 3; so-called "overdate" with mintmark over EN in TEN.

The 1846-O eagle is among the scarcer issues from this mint in higher grades. It is mostly seen in VF-EF grades and properly graded AU's are very hard to locate, especially with original surfaces.

This is one of the nicer 1846-O eagles that I have offered in some time. It shows abundant luster over lightly marked surfaces. The strike is sharp and the color is a pleasing natural russet hue which is even save for some deepening at the obverse border.

The last APR for an AU55 1846-O eagle designated as "1846-O" was an NGC coin which brought $5,390 in Great Collections 2/14 auction. A PCGS AU55 designated as "1846/'5'-O sold for $6,038 in Bowers and Merena's 8/10 auction.

This date is essentially unavailable in grades higher than AU55 to AU58 and thispleasing example represents an exciting opportunity for the advanced New Orleans eagle collector.

CAC has approved two in this grade and one finer.
