CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS AU58 1843-O EAGLE

The 1843-O eagle is common in grades up to AU53 but it becomes scarce in properly graded AU55 and it is rare in AU58. Most Choice AU examples show flatness of strike at the centers and are processed with dull, lifeless surfaces as a result.

This fresh-to-the-market example was recently found in Europe. It is very sharply struck with full centers and it shows little actual wear. The color is a pleasing natural lemon-gold and there is little actual wear. Some marks can be seen in the central left obverse and there are a few fine vertical scratches on the reverse.

The last two PCGS AU58 1843-O eagles to sell at auction brought $4,583 in June 2016 and $4,230 in June 2015; both were vastly inferior to the present example in terms of quality and appearance.

If available, an Uncirculated 1843-O eagle is a five-figure coin, making this nice AU58 a great value at half the price.
