SCARCE CHOICE AU 1843-O EAGLE

The 1843-O is among the more available early date eagles from the New Orleans mint. It becomes scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is very rare (and expensive) at any point in the Uncirculated grading scale.

This lustrous example is pleasing for the date and grade with some reddish-gold color seen mostly at the borders. The strike is very sharp with near-complete detail seen at the centers while the surfaces show no detracting deep marks as seen on most 1843-O eagles.

The last PCGS AU55 to sell at auction brought $3,408 as Heritage 1/17: 6898. Another PCGS AU55 sold for $4,406 as Heritage 9/12: 4976 and these are the only two auction appearances for PCGS AU55 examples of this date since early 2007.

It is hard to locate this date in grades higher than this.
