CHOICE AU 1849-C GOLD DOLLAR

Closed Wreath variety.

The 1849-C gold dollar is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for gold dollars from the Charlotte mint. Varieties exist with an Open Wreath (extremely rare) and Closed Wreath. The latter is not often seen above AU55 and it is quite rare in full Uncirculated.

This issue has a distinctive appearance with a convex obverse which always gives examples the appearance of more wear on this die than on the reverse. Both sides are frosty and show nice lemon-gold color; a few small marks on the obverse preclude a 58 grade.

Not a single PCGS AU55 1849-C CW gold dollar has appeared at auction since November 2007 and only a few NGC AU55's have appeared during this period.

A nice example of this scarce and historic issue.
