Bust Right. BD-1, R-4. Small reverse stars variety.

The 1807 Bust Right half eagle is a numismatically significant transitional issue as it is one of two distinct design types issued during this year. The older Bust Right type is not a scarce issue in circulated grades although examples with original color and choice surfaces are not often seen.

This lustrous slider is characterized by very attractive reddish-gold color on the highlights, indicating storage in an old coin cabinet. It shows just the slightest amount of friction on the high spots while the surfaces have some minor scuffs, none of which are detracting. This piece is one of the nicer AU58 examples of the popular Bust Right half eagle type which I’ve handled in some time.

The last PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction realized $11,163 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 13211 and it was not approved by CAC. In fact, no CAC approved AU58′s have appeared at auction in recent memory.

This is an absolutely perfect coin for the collector who is looking for a piece of early gold which has character.

CAC has approved 10 in this grade with 17 finer.
