A total of 50 Proofs were issued and the typical survival rate of approximately 50% of the mintage probably is correct for the 1867 Three Dollar. But this was not an extremely well-made issue and most Proofs show little cameo contrast. In fact, PCGS has only graded one Deep Cameo in any grade–this exact coin.

While “only” graded Proof-63, this coin has real eye appeal and it has not been cleaned or wiped; it shows scattered hairlines in the fields (mostly on the obverse) which are likely the result of improper storage in an old coin album or cabinet. The reflectiveness is still wholly intact beneath attractive medium golden-orange hues and the contrast in exceptional with a heavily frosted portrait totally offset by the watery mirror fields.

With the exception of this one coin (see below) there are no auction records for a PR63DCAM of this date.

An important and attractive coin for the collector of Proof gold.

CAC has approved one coin in this grade with none finer.

Ex SB 10/14: 10204 at $19,388 and earlier sold as Lot 5330 in Heritage’s 8/12 auction where it realized $21,150.
