Old Green Holder. By today’s standards I grade this coin at least AU55, if not AU58.

Only 5,000 examples were struck and many were melted either during the Civil War or in the years after. This date tends to either come really nice or really ratty and it is unusual to find a nice, lightly circulated example.

This very pleasing example was struck from double clashed dies and it shows rich green-gold centers framed by fiery rose flashes at the borders. There is a good degree of luster seen on both sides and the surfaces show just a small amount of chatter in the fields. This piece has never been cleaned or dipped and it is, as I mentioned above, very hard to find an 1863 three dollar with natural color.

If you collect Civil War gold or if you like eye-appealing rare coins with a great story, this piece is perfect for you!

CAC has approved two in this grade with 14 finer.
