The 1855-S is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Three Dollar gold piece made at the San Francisco mint. There were just 6,000 made and of the few hundred which exist, nearly all grade EF40 to AU53. In AU58, this is a rare date and there are only three or four currently known in Uncirculated with the Pogue III: 3093, graded MS62+ by PCGS, recently crossing the auction block at $55,525.

This light yellow gold example has the distinction of being the finest 1855-S Three I have handled in close to a decade. It is well detailed and very lustrous with minor wear seen on the high spots, primarily on the obverse. There are a few abrasions located beneath the chin of the Indian Princess but no other marks of consequence are noted and this is unusual for the issue as most are very choppy.

Only two PCGS AU58′s have sold since 2000 and the last of these brought $19,550 as ANR 8/04: 976. An NGC AU58 with CAC approval (this exact coin) sold for $17,625 as Heritage 11/13: 3822.

After the recent sale of the Great Lakes collection of Three Dollars, this neglected series is likely to see more collector attention and truly rare dates such as the 1855-S are apt to become in demand once again.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU58 with none finer.
