Like the eagle of this year, the 1877-CC half eagle is an overlooked issue which is overshadowed by other CC issues of this decade. Only 125-150 are known from an original mintage of 8,680 and the majority of the surviving population is in the VF30 to EF45 range. Properly graded AU’s are really scarce and most are in the 50 to 53 range. I am aware of just two which grade Uncirculated, the finer of which grades PCGS MS62.

This lustrous fresh-to-the-market example is well struck for the issue with no weakness at the borders as often seen. The color is outstanding with flashes of warm orange and reddish-gold which is more obvious and extensive on the reverse. Some old scratches between stars five and six are nearly impossible to see unless they are pointed out and the rest of the coin is faultless.

The only recent APR for a PCGS graded AU55 1877-CC half eagle is $14,688 for a CAC approved piece which was offered as Heritage 11/14: 3991. Only two pieces graded AU58 have crossed the block since 2002 which is a good indication of just how rare this date is in very high grades.

An important piece for the advanced Carson City gold specialist and the highest grade 1877-CC half eagle that I have offered in many years.
