The 1866 half eagle is numismatically significant as it is the first Philadelphia issue of this denomination with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added to the reverse. Only 6,700 were struck and around 75-85 are known today, mostly in the EF40 to AU50 range. Nice AU examples are very scarce and this date is decidedly rare in properly graded AU58. I am aware of three Uncirculated 1866 half eagles, the finest of which, a PCGS MS62, was sold by me in 2014.

This very choice slider has no apparent wear and might have graded at least MS60 were it not for some abrasions clustered in the right obverse field. This coin is original and attractive with natural light rose and orange-gold color over frosty surfaces. As is seen on all 1866 half eagles, there are some parallel die striations on both sides, as made. The eye appeal is exceptional for the date.

No PCGS AU58 has sold at auction since May 2004. A CAC approved PCGS AU55 brought $8,625 as Heritage 10/11: 4927 and an NGC MS61 without CAC approval sold for $12,238 as Heritage 1/15: 7096.

A great example of this scarce issue and a coin with multiple levels of demand.

CAC has approved one in this grade with one finer (MS62).
