Only 2,442 business strike 1863 half eagles were made and this is the third rarest Liberty Head half eagle from this mint after the 1875 and the 1865. There are an estimated 30-40 known with fewer than 10 properly graded AU’s and not a single example in Uncirculated.
This coin has essentially been net graded by PCGS as it is really an AU55 to AU58 with a small but prominent reverse mark in the field behind the eagle’s neck. It shows pleasing natural color with medium yellowish-green centers framed by deep reddish crescents at the borders. There is a good deal of original frost present and the obverse has great eye appeal.
There has never been a PCGS AU53 1863 half eagle sold at auction. In October 2006, an NGC AU53 brought $9,775.
I have not handled an example of this date in any grade since an NGC AU55 which I bought and quickly sold in early 2009 and there are few dates in the Liberty Head half eagle series which I have more respect for than this.
