The 1852-D is among the more common half eagles from this mint. It is seen with regularity in the lower AU grades but these examples are usually very unattractive with signs of cleaning and a lack of originality.

This is an uncommonly choice example for the grade with prettydeep green-gold color which shades to red. The strike is typical for the issue with weakness at the borders but with sharp centers; the surfaces are clean and choice. If this coin were dipped it would certainly grade at least AU55 but it would lose its charm and character and be just another typical quality 1852-D.

The only PCGS/CAC AU53 1852-D half eagle to sell at a recent auction was Goldberg 2/12: 1536 which realized $3,565. There have been no other PCGS examples of this date in this grade sold at auction since January 2007.

If you appreciate originality and want a nice 1852-D half eagle, this is the coin for you!

CAC has approved five in this grade with five finer.
