As a variety, the 1846-D/D is not as scarce as the 1846-D Normal Mintmark but because of its highly visual double mintmark, it is in higher demand. It is moderately scarce in the lower AU grades but it is extremely hard to find with original color and choice surfaces.
This is among the choicer, more appealing examples of this variety I have handled in some time. It shows rich even green-gold color with a splash of reddish color at the date and around the reverse lettering; some dirt can be seen within the ED in UNITED.
No CAC approved AU53 example of this variety has ever sold at auction.
A nice piece for the Dahlonega half eagle specialist but neat enough to be the perfect “type” coin a a Dahlonega collection.
CAC has approved three in this grade with just one finer.
