The 1904-S is likely the rarest 20th century half eagle from this mint and it is not often seen in grades higher than MS63. There are approximately a half dozen known in Gem Uncirculated with the finest of these clearly the PCGS MS67 which last sold for $34,500 as Heritage 5/07: 2306.

This borderline Gem is fresh to the market and it is characterized by dynamic frosty luster and rich natural orange-gold coloration. It is kept from the Gem level by a few small ticks in the fields but if this were a common date in an MS65 holder, you wouldn’t give it a second thought.

There have never been any auction records for an MS64+ example of this date; the last PCGS MS65 brought $7,188 all the way back in April 2001.

CAC has approved this one coin in MS64/MS64+ with only one finer (MS67)
