The 1844-O is comparable in overall rarity to the 1843-O and 1845-O eagles. It is seen most often in EF and lower AU grades and it is very scarce in properly graded AU58. There are an estimated five or sx known in Uncirculated, the finest of which is an MS62 graded by PCGS.

It is very likely that this example never saw actual circulation but it was shipped loose in a bag and during this transport, the surfaces were noticeably abraded. These abrasions are not deep or detracting and they do not interfere with the abundant remaining luster. The strike is sharp for the date and the color is a pleasing light yellow-gold hue.

Only two PCGS AAU58 1844-O eagles have sold at auction since January 2009. The most recent record is for a CAC approved piece which went for $7,931 as HA 6/13: 4802. The second (which is an earlier appearance of this coin) brought $6,463 as Heritage 10/12: 6021.

If available, a PCGS MS61 1844-O eagle might bring over $20,000 which makes this pleasing AU58 a good value, in my opinion.
