The 1844-O is comparable in overall rarity to the 1845-O eagle. It is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55 and quite rare in grades above this. Most are seen with a processed appearance and examples with natural color and choice surfaces are much harder to locate than generally realized.
This totally original example is fresh to the market and it shows very attractive deep, even green gold color on the obverse and the reverse. Both sides are well detailed and lightly abraded with some luster clinging to the protected areas. The eye appeal is far above average for the date and grade.
No CAC approved AU53 from NGC or PCGS has ever sold at auction.
A much scarcer issue in this grade than the current population figures would suggest and a truly pleasing example from an aesthetic standpoint.
CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.
