This is one of the more available quarter eagles from the Dahlonega mint and the fact that it is sometimes found with exceptional color and bold detail makes it a favorite among type collectors.

The surfaces show rich orange-gold color and the reverse has bursts of dramatic reddish-gold color which is suggestive of having been stored either in a leather pouch or an old wood coin cabinet. There is enough luster and body to suggest an AU55 grade but there are enough marks to have properly graded it as is. These are most visible in the left obverse field.

Only two slabbed AU53 examples have sold at auction since February 2009, both in PCGS holders. One brought $3,565 while the other went cheaply at $2,585.

It has become hard to locate nice, original AU Dahlonega quarter eagles for under $3,000.
