The 1845-O is, by a large margin, the rarest quarter eagle from this mint. There are fewer than 100 known from the original mintage of just 4,000 and this is an issue with multiple levels of demand as indicated by the fact that its price has risen steadily during the last few years.

It is hard to locate 1845-O quarter eagles in pleasing collector grades and this coin is handsome for the grade with nice natural medium green-gold color shading to red at the border. As is typical for the issue, the surfaces show some scattered marks but this piece lacks the mint-made planchet issues found on the majority of examples.

There have been just three examples in EF40 sold at auction since 2009 with the best of these, ex Heritage 3/11: 4631, bringing $4,025; it was not approved by CAC.

For the money, this is a very solid value and it represents a rare chance to own a truly rare branch mint issue for less than $4,000.

This is the only example in this grade approved by CAC with seven finer.
