The 1859 is the third scarcest Philadelphia eagle from the 1850′s after the 1858 and the 1857. It is scarce and very undervalued in the lower AU grades and is almost never seen with natural color and choice surfaces.

This totally original example is likely sourced from Europe as it shows the dark orange-gold color with contrasting deeper highlights which is typical for “Euro” coins. There is a good deal of luster on both sides and the surfaces are slightly abraded but less so than usual for this issue.

There have been just four AU53 1859 eagles sold at auction since 1009 with the most recent of these an NGC coin which sold for $2,115 as Stacks Bowers 7/13: 5258.

This is the only example of this date in AU53 to have CAC approval with none finer; only three for the date have stickers.
