Only 5,000 Carson City double eagles were produced and this is one of the rarest Type Three issues from this mint, along with the 1878-CC and the 1879-CC. This issue circulated extensively and most survivors are in the VF-EF range. Nice AU examples are rare, especially with natural color and unmolested surfaces.

This is the finest 1891-CC double eagle I have offered for sale since I sold the Bass PCGS/CAC AU58 in the Summer of 2014. This piece is well detailed and uncommonly clean for the issue with natural light to medium orange-gold color on the obverse and the reverse. A small, faint grease stain at the inner right obverse field is mint-made and non-detracting; some toning on the horizontal shield lines serves as ready identification.

No CAC approved AU55 1891-CC double eagle has sold at auction. An NGC AU55 realized $23,500 as Heritage 7/15: 3380 while the last PCGS AU55 sold at auction in early 2013.

If you are a serious collector of CC double eagles, you are no doubt aware of the rarity of this date in higher grades and with the cachet of PCGS/CAC grading.

CAC has approved six in this grade with 10 finer.
