The 1890-CC is the most available Carson City double eagle from the 1890′s. It is reasonably easy to difficult in all circulated grades although it has become hard to locate with natural color and surfaces. This date becomes expensive in Uncirculated and for most collectors, an AU53 to A55 example is in the “sweet spot.”
This lustrous example has nice natural orange-gold and greenish color with some reddish splashes in the obverse fields and at the lower central reverse. The strike is typical for the issue with some weakness on the fleur-du-lys below the arrowheads and the top off Liberty’s head. Some scuffs in the fields limitt the grade but this is a solid piece for an AU53 with really nice overall eye appeal.
