The 1889-CC is among the more available CC double eagles and can even be found in the lower Uncirculated grades without great effort. However, it is rare in properly graded MS62 and very rare above this. MS62 examples come up for sale around once per year (the PCGS population figure for MS62’s is heavily inflated by resubmissions and should be ignored) and when they are available, they seldom look like the present example.

This is an absolutely beautiful Carson City double eagle with remarkably clean surfaces that are free of all but the smallest abrasions. There is a small, faint copper spot in the left obverse field and some other areas of copper along the obverse border between 4:00 and 5:00. This piece is undipped, totally original and fresh as the proverbial daisy with some of the best appeal you will ever see on a CC double eagle.

The last 1889-CC in PCGS MS62CAC to sell was Battle Born coin that brought $27,600. The present example is cleaner, but lacks the wonderful color that the Battle Born coin displayed. An important coin for the advanced collector of Carson City double eagles.
