While deservedly overshadowed by the rare low mintage business strike Type Three double eagles from this era, the 1880 is a scarce and undervalued issue which is not often seen above AU55 to AU58.

This lightly worn example shows nice even russet color with extremely choice surfaces for the date. Most 1880 double eagles are excessively abraded and this piece, thankfully, is remarkably clean. Both sides show a good amount of remaining luster.

A PCGS AU55 example sold for $2,585 as Heritage 3/15: 4252 while an NGC AU55 brought $2,415 as Heritage 1/15: 7549. Neither was approved by CAC and I can find no records of another CAC approved AU55 from either service having ever crossed the block.

In my opinion, the 1880 is among the more undervalued issues in the entire Type Three Liberty Had series and this affordable piece should appeal to the savvy, budget-conscious collector.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 6 finer. Only 13 in total have been approved for this date.
