With a mintage of just 13,180 and an estimated 300-350 known it is a legitimately tough coin by the standards of Carson City double eagles. It is hard to locate in popular collector grades, especially in PCGS holders and with good overall eye appeal.

This example is fresh to the market and it is quite lustrous for the assigned grade. There are a few abrasions and the wear is consistent with the assigned grade but there is more luster present than one might expect to find on an EF45. The 1878-CC double eagle is one of the harder CC double eagles to locate with good overall eye appeal.

The only PCGS EF45 1878-CC double eagle to sell at auction since 2013 realized $9,400 as Heritage 1/15: 7536. This is the exact same amount that the most recent NGC example brought in the Heritage 4/15 sale. Neither was approved by CAC.

This is the best available quality for this date in this price range and not many 1878-CC double eagles have been offered by DWN in the last few years.
