CHOICE 1873 OPEN 3 DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Varieties of 1873 double eagles are known with an Open 3 and a Closed 3. The Open 3 is more common and, in fact, it is the single most available Type Two double eagle in higher grades which makes it perfect for type purposes.

This piece is undipped and very frosty with lovely natural rose and orange-gold colors seen on both sides. A few small shallow scuffs in the left obverse field are probably what kept PCGS from grading this coin MS63 but I can assure you is much nicer than most 1873 Open 3 $20′s I see in 63 holders.

Only two CAC approved PCGS MS62+ examples of this variety have sold at auction: Stacks Bowers 3/16: 14335 which went cheaply at $2,938 and Heritage 2013 ANA: 5219 which went for $4,994.

A perfect coin for the savvy type collector and good value when compared to an MS63 at $5,500-6,500 which likely won’t be any nicer.

CAC has approved 141 in MS62 with 22 finer.
