RARE GEM SLIDER 1873-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1873-CC is a somewhat overrated coin in lower grades but it becomes very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is rare and expensive in Uncirculated. Most of the examples graded AU58 are not choice and only a small number can honestly be termed as “PQ.”

This is the nicest AU58 1873-CC double eagle I have ever offered for sale. It is remarkably clean for this issue with an almost total absence of abrasions and lovely natural orange-gold coloration. This piece appears to have never been dipped or processed and if it did see any circulation, it was only for the briefest period of time. A good deal of luster shows below the coloration and the overall eye appeal is exceptional.

Heritage 9/15: 5031, graded AU58 by PCGS and approved by CAC sold for $32,900 but the previous PCGS 58 to sell at auction realized $38,188 as Stacks Bowers 8/15: 10274 and it wasn’t CAC approved.

This date is essentially unavailable in Uncirculated (the last to trade at auction–an NGC MS61– sold for nearly $60,000 in 2014) and this exceptional PCGS/CAC slider may well represent the best piece available to today’s advanced CC double eagle collector.

CAC has approved 10 in this grade with none finer.
