As with the 1868-S and 1870-s, this date is available in the lower AU grades but it is scarce in properly graded AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated with nearly all known pieces in this grade range no better than MS60 to MS61 and suffering from chronic bagmarks.

This is a true Gem Slider that has better eye appeal than any MS60 to MS61 example of this date which I have seen. There is a tiny amount of friction on the cheek of Liberty but this tends to be the case on Type Two double eagles in MS62 holders and this AU58+ is nearly fully lustrous and totally original. The surfaces show only a smattering of small marks and the color, a blend of rose and orange-gold, is extremely attractive.

Stacks Bowers 4/13: 1392, graded AU58 by PCGS, holds the record for this date/grade at $8,519. A PCGS AU58 approved by CAC sold for $6,463 as Heritage 11/13: 3905.

This is one of only two 1869-S double eagles graded AU58+ by PCGS and I would wager that it is the nicest “circulated” example of this date currently accounted for. With a nice quality PCGS/CAC MS61 valued at $13,000-16,000, this super slider AU58+ seems like better value.

CAC has approved 14 examples in AU58 with four finer.
