The 1863 is the second rarest double eagle produced during the Civil War after the 1862. It is an issue that is in continual demand among Type One double eagle collectors with further pressure applied by Civil War specialists.

This is one of the nicest 1863 double eagles that I have handled in this grade. It shows very pleasing vivid rose hues under an overtone of orange-gold and light green. There is a good deal of luster seen on both sides and the fields lack the dense marks so often seen on this date.

This is not a shipwreck example and it has original, appealing surfaces.

The last two APR’s for NGC graded AU55 examples of this date are $9,605 in 2012 and $11,500 in 2011.

An important coin for the advanced Double Eagle specialist.
