The Normal Reverse 1861-S double eagle is popular with collectors due to its Civil War issuance. It is fairly common in lower AU grades but it is not easy to find in AU55 to AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated.
This fresh-to-the-market example has enough luster to grade AU55 but it is just a hair too “ticky” in my opinion to qualify as such. The color is a light yellow-gold with some deeper orange hues at the upper reverse.
Only one PCGS AU53 example of this issue has sold at auction since 2010 (!) and it was a nice CAC approved piece which realized $3,500 as DLRC 2/16: 6224.
A nice, affordable Civil War double eagle.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 29 finer.
