The 1859-S is among the more available San Francisco double eagles of this era but it is harder to find with original color and surfaces than such issues as the 1858-S, 1860-S and 1862-S.
This delightful example has deep, natural orange-gold and greenish colors with contrasting highlights seen on the obverse and the reverse. There is a good amount of mint luster and fewer abrasions than usual. When I submitted this coin for grading, I was pretty certain it would come back as an AU55 and I still think it should grade as such.
It is becoming more and more difficult to find Type One double eagles with this fresh appearance.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 16 finer.
