The 1883-CC is a common Carson City double eagle in most circulated grades but choice, original examples in AU55 to AU58 have become hard to find in recent years.
This is a perfect coin for the grade with deep, even russet colors seen on the obverse and the reverse. Unlike most 1883-CC double eagles, this piece has few abrasions and it has never been dipped or processed. But this is not a dirty “Euro” coin as there is no blackness seen on the high spots. The eye appeal is exceptional.
The last PCGS AU55 1883-CC $20.00 to sell at auction brought $6,463 as Heritage 2/14: 4288; it was not approved by CAC. Two non-CAC NGC AU55′s realized $5,581 in Heritage’s April 2014 auction. Again, these were not approved by CAC.
This would be a perfect coin for the collector seeking a single choice, original Type Three double eagle from this mint.
