Along with the 1878-CC, the 1879-CC is a rare, low mintage issue which is missing from many collections of Carson City double eagles. There were only 10,708 struck and of the few hundred which exist, most are in the EF40 to AU50 range. Locating an example with original color and surfaces is extremely difficult.

This piece has a nice “Euro” appearance with medium to deep green-gold surfaces which are accentuated by splashes of orange and contrasted by some darkness on the high spots. The fields lack the typical excessive marks and the eye appeal is decidedly above average for the grade. A few light hairlines in the left obverse are virtually impossible to see unless the coin is tilted and examined under high magnification.

Heritage 1/14: 7166, graded EF45 and approved by CAC but not as cosmetic as this coin, sold for $11,163. Only seven 1879-CC double eagles graded EF45 have sold at auction since the Spring of 2008.

This is one of the most aesthetically appealing examples of this date that I have seen in some time.
