The 1868-S is comparable in overall rarity to the 1869-S and 1870-S. It is generally seen in EF45-AU55 grades and scarce above this. Uncirculated examples are rare and infrequently seen above MS61. IN the higher AU grades, most 1868-S double eagles have poor eye appeal as a result of having been dipped or processed.

This example has a classic “Euro” appearance with deep orange-gold color accentuated by some darkening of the high spots. The surfaces are free of significant marks and show a good amount of luster. The eye appeal is well above average for the date and grade.

The last CAC approved AU55 1868-S double eagle to sell at auction brought a strong $4,704 as Heritage 1/14: 5524. Another sold for $3,525 as Heritage 4/13: 6000. Both were graded by NGC.

With Uncirculated examples of this date commanding five figure prices, a nice AU55 makes sense for most collectors.

CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 18 finer.
