While not rare in this grade, the 1860-S is not often seen in AU55 with original surfaces and a lack of severe marks. It becomes scarce in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated.
This rich yellow-gold example shows pleasing natural color with lightly marked surfaces and a good deal of luster for the grade. There are a few marks at the inner points of the first star on the obverse and a few scuffs below RI in AMERICA on the reverse.
The last PCGS AU55 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 5/12: 5235 (approved by CAC) which brought $4,888. An NGC AU55 example brought the same amount in Heritage’s 3/12 sale and it wasn’t approved by CAC.
With Uncirculated examples priced at over $10,000 this choice AU55 seems like a sensible alternative.
