Double Die Obverse, FS-101. Designated on the holder insert by PCGS.

This variety is easily identifiable with a 5x glass. The letters BERTY in LIBERTY show dramatic strike doubling. This variety is rarer than most collectors realize and of the 75-100 examples of this date that I have searched through in the last five years, I’d say that no more than three have shown this doubling. The 1859-S Double Die Obverse is recognized by both PCGS and NGC and it is very rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58. The best I have personally seen or sold was an NGC AU58 that I sold to a knowledgeable collector for $6,500 close to four years ago; before collecting this series by variety became as popular as it is today.

The coin itself is crusty and original with a nice deep, dark “Euro” appearance. There is a good amount of satiny frost on both sides and just a few scuffs in the fields keep this from an otherwise possible AU55+ to AU58 grade. The eye appeal s nice for the date and exceptional for the variety.

The PCGS population for this variety is just one coin in AU55 with none finer; this is a little bit low due to the fact that this service hasn’t recognized this variety for more than a few years. The NGC numbers, three in AU55 with five finer (best MS60) are more important as, if I recall, they have recognized the 1859-S DDO for much longer.

An impressive and very important coin for the advanced Type One double eagle collector.
