The 1858-S is the mot overlooked pre-Civil War double eagle from the San Francisco mint. It is an issue whose rarity has not been impacted by shipwrecks and it remains quite scarce in the higher circulated grades and rare in Uncirculated. When available in AU55 to AU58, it tends to be bright, baggy and unappealing.

This is one of the nicer circulated 1858-S double eagles which I have handled in some time. It appears to be totally original with nice natural light rose, green-gold and pale orange shades atop lightly marked and very lustrous surfaces. I could easily see this coin in an AU58 holder and even as a 58 it would still have a choice appearance.

No AU55 example with CAC approval has ever sold at auction and no PCGS AU55′s have sold since HA 6/11: 4890

I find this date to be very undervalued in comparison to the better known 1856-S and 1857-S and this specific coin has to be among the nicer slabbed AU55′s.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with nine finer.
